Gout is Becoming a Pandemic Disease!

Gout is becoming like a pandemic disease! Despite the fact that it is not contagious, but it has shown signs and patterns of a pandemic disease. It is affect more and more adult males at a very fast pace and the affected age group is getting younger and younger.

If I would to say gout is a pandemic disease, then what is the transferring agent that spreads this malicious illness globally, especially in the developed countries? Is it a virus, bacteria, or fungus? No! The name of the agent is... Lifestyle!

Gout can be considered as a social disease, a disease where shows an analogical and significant correlation between lifestyle habits, especially diet and social development. Take a trip some not so developed countries where for the people living there, the luxury of having yummy meaty food can only happens in their dreams.

If you ask among the adult males above the age of 30, how many of them or their friends and relatives are suffering from gout. You might get blank stares with puzzles wondering what you are talking about. Gout can be very rare in places like, so rate that most of the local citizens hardly heard of throughout their lives!

As stated by Dr. Gillian McKeith in her popular book, you are what you eat! Gout is a result of what you put into your mouth. Gout is a benchmark of how much meat and alcohol you have consumed through out your life.

There are many different theories on how gout comes about. Some say it is because of the lack of certain enzyme in to body that can help to get rid of the excessive uric acids. Some say it is because of the weaken kidneys that failed to excrete the uric acid through urine properly. Some even say it is because of family genetic inheritance.

What ever the reason it may be, one thing for sure is that gout is proven to be a disease of a 'rich' lifestyle. As more and more people having good life as a result of rapid economy development, more and more people will join the rank of gout army.

Gout might not be a deadly disease but the impacts it can bring to you and your family immeasurable. Not only it brings the unbearable torturing pain, it brings along emotional stress that can spread to everyone else in the family.

Why Gout Does Not Happen to Most Other Mammals?

Whenever it comes to discussing about gout related issues, one primary topic is, "What causes gout?" Then people will start pointing fingers at the over consumption of high purine foods such as organs meat, sardine, anchovies, mushrooms and the list goes on.

Purine is a natural organic compound exists in all living things. The amount of naturally occurring purines on earth is enormous. Out of four bases found in DNA: adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine two of them (adenine and guanine) are forms of purine. Other popular forms of purine are caffeine found in coffee and theobromine (the compound that gives chocolate its bitter taste).

Every day there are millions of body cells die, and this will result in huge amount of DNA being broken down to release those DNA bases. Guanine will go through a process called deamination which break down guanine to xanthine by an enzyme called guanase, then another enzyme, xanthine oxidase will then oxidize xanthine to uric acid.

Uric acid is the final end products of purine degradation in humans and higher apes, but the degradation process goes one step further in most other mammals. There is another enzyme called uricase which further transforms uric acid to allantoin. Does that name sound familiar to you? Allantoin is a popular ingredient found in a wide range of beauty products! Take a look at the ingredients list of some of the facial creams.

Scientists believe that uricase did exist in our ancient ancestors, but somehow along the process of evolution, human lost the ability to produce uricase in the body due to some sort of enzymatic defects. This could be what the factor to that is responsible for all types of gout, primary as well as secondary.

Since purine or uric acid does not occur in excessive amount inside most mammal body, why we, human get a huge surge of uric acid in our blood after consuming the meat from these animals, especially their organs? Why for some gout patients, consumption of just small piece of these meats will suffer the gout attack within hours?

Two major animal organs that contain high concentration of purine are the liver and kidney. This is because that is where the purine degradation process takes place. Huge amount of purines will be carried by the blood to these sites to be broken down to uric acid and then allantoin which will eventually get out from its body through the urine of feces.

Your Highness! Congratulations For Getting the Disease of Kings - Gout!

Throughout history, gout has been associated with rich foods and excessive alcohol consumption, a lifestyle that could only be afforded by the wealthy class of the society. In the olden days, the kings and their loyal families were the only group of people who had the luxury to enjoy all the meaty food and drown themselves in the sea of alcohol.

They shown signs of gout attack at very young age and it became acute and chronic at the later part of their life which also resulted in other health complications such as heart disease and kidney failure. This is why some of them died at relatively young ages. This is why gout was popularly known as 'The Disease of Kings' or 'Rich Man's Disease'.

Wondering who were the rich and famous in our history books that suffered from gout? Just to name a few prominent figures here, among the famous gout patient are Alexander the Great, Charlemagne or Charles the Great, Leonardo da Vinci, Voltaire, Sir Isaac Newton, and Charles Darwin. This is just the tip of the iceberg. If people were more openly discuss about their health problem, more cases will be recorded and you will be surprised by the thousands of names that were listed.

King Henry VIII, who lived from 1491 to 1547, was a famous victim of gout. It is well known that in his later life, he was abhorrently overweight and suffered from gout and possibly syphilis. However, he had been a very active man in his younger days. It was an accident in 1536 that made him suffered a thigh wound which prevented him from any exercise or physical activities.

Now look back at our modern lifestyle, can you the number of King Henry VIII among us? It is as if everybody is living the king's life. Nice food is abundant and is very much affordable compared to the last few centuries.

It does not take a wounded thigh to cripple us or stop us from some healthy exercise. Cinema-like LCD TV, Computer games, Play Station are just portion of things that stops us from being physically active.

Continuous consumption of highly acidic food and lack of exercise (which promote blood circulation and detoxification) will result in excessive accumulation of uric acids which will crystallize in the joints and trigger gout attack. It is totally up to you to decide to be a healthy king or gouty king.

What Food is OK to Eat For a Person Who Has Gout?

Gout is a direct result of your diet habit over the years. The more serious your gout condition is the more items you will need to strike off from your list of favorite food. You will be shocked when you see the list of food you cannot eat, which is almost 90 percent of your favorite. Instead of telling you a long list of food you can eat, it is more practical to explain to you what food you should avoid.

When you consume too much food which has high purine content such as organ meats, sardines, anchovies, mutton, and the list goes on... Most of them are high protein food from animal sources, but even some non-meat food which are high in purine too, common one that is often heard of associate with gout attack are some mushrooms, peas, beans and cauliflower.

Purines are natural substances found in all cells because it is the vital part of DNA structure. Millions of cells die within our body in a day. As cells are broken down through various bio-chemical mechanisms, significant amount of purine will be released and these free floating purines will be further broken down to uric acid which will eventually excreted out from the body through urine.

You are adding extra burden to your body if you continuously eat in more purines. Your liver and kidneys will have to work extra hard to get rid of those excessive uric acids and it will reach a point when it can take it no more and this is when those uric acids seep into your joint and crystallize to urate crystals that trigger your gout attack.

If you want to reverse the process, not only you have to minimize or cut off (the hardest thing to do) your high purine diet, you must also eat more food which is classified as alkaline food to help detoxify or neutralize those excessive acids that accumulated in your body over the years.

This change of diet is not like the slimming program that last only for a few weeks or months. In order to get rid of or cure your gout, you must gradually shift your eating habit from carnivorous towards the herbivore side and keep it so for as long as you can. It is like paying back the 'debt' over the years. Well, it is okay to be omnivore sometimes. After all, food is part of joy in life. Just like many aspects of life, do not over-indulge.

The Difference Between Gout and Pseudogout

Pseudogout is a not so well known disease which shows the similar symptoms or effects as gout. Just like gout, it is also a form of arthritis that attacks suddenly and gives a painful swelling inflammation in one or more of your joints.

Gout is the result of too much urid acid in the body that causes crystallization that forms a type of fine crystals which is scientifically known as monosodium urate. On the other hand pseudogout is caused by the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the synovial fluid of joints. Pseudogout is often referred to as Calcium Pyprophosphate Deposition Disease, CPPD.

Thus, what differentiates between gout and CPPD is the type of crystal deposits. Since number of gout cases is many times greater than the cases of CPPD which makes gout a more popular and this is why CPPD is known as pseudogout which literally means "false gout".

Pseudogout usually occurs in individuals of age 50 and above. One interesting fact is, pseudogout tend to attack women more frequently while in the case of gout, it is men that dominate more 90 percent of the cases.

Reports show that pseudogout can occasionally coexist with gout. This means that both of those types of crystal can be found in the same joint fluid at times. Researchers have also noted that the cartilage is more calcified when both forms of deposits is found in a particular joint.

While gout can be diagnosed by observing the symptoms of the affected joints and confirmed with the uric acid level in the blood test report (although there some cases where gout attacks people with healthy uric acid level).

Since there is not direct correlation between pseudogout with any of the elements in the blood test, the most accurate water to diagnose whether a patient is having CPPD is through X-ray. This is because pseudogout is a type of calcifications known as chondocalcinosis and calcium compound deposit is visible on the X-ray films.

Another way to differentiate gout from pseudogout in the lab is through examination of the synovial fluid from the joint. Under a special powerful microscope called polarizing microscope, the calcium pyrophosphate crystals can be identified because both types of crystals have very different chemical structure.

Treatments for pseudogout are same as the treatments for gout. This is because both cases have the same immune reactions that cause inflammation and pain regardless of what type of crystal that triggers it. Thus, colchicines and NSAIDs (ibuprofen) are applicable to pseudogout patients. The only exception is allopurinol which controls the uric acid level in the blood, it will be useless in the case of CPPD.

Can Repeated Gout Attacks Cause Permanent Damage to the Joints?

Yes! It will and the damage is permanent and irreversible! Thus, you must take actions to prevent the condition from getting worse before it is too late.

Gout attack is an autoimmune reaction that is triggered by the urate crystals that form within the synovial fluid inside the joints. Formation of these tiny needle-like crystals can happen over night without any pre-warning or signs.

The sudden occurrence of these solid objects was treated as foreign invaders by the immune system and it will send signals through hormones and enzymes to activate a series of defensive mechanisms. The same reaction that happens when the saliva of mosquito that bites you goes into your body, but in the case of gout, it happens deep inside the joint.

The inflammation or swelling will last for days with or without medications. Most people think that gout is gone after the pain is gone. No way! The immune reaction will subside over time but that does not mean that the urate crystals have been removed.

This is because urate crystal is not anything organic. It is not virus, not bacteria, not fungus that can be destroyed with antibiotic or consumed by phagocytes (a type of white blood cells that eat or ingest harmful bacteria and dying cells). After all, gout is not caused by any microbes. It is a disease that resulted from one's diet or lifestyle.

After the inflammation is over, those urate crystals will deposit inside the joints on the cartilage surface. Whenever there is new urate crystals formed, another round of gout attack will be triggered and after that more sediment will stuck on the cartilage.

After a few years, this harsh layer of urate shell will become thicker and thicker. Some part of it will grow to be like sharp chisel or drill head. Any excessive movement of the joints will force these 'urate chisels' to scratch on the surface of the opposite cartilage layer.

When part of the cartilage layer is completely being scrapped off, this condition is called cartilage lesion when the bones is exposed directly to the synovial fluids. At this point, the particular joint will have higher risk of getting another form of arthritis will further damage the joint and eventually causes the joint to become immovable.

Do not wait until your joint is diagnosed with physical damage, you must actively take the initiative to reverse the process as soon as you know you are suffering from gout. Regretting later will not save your precious joints back.

How Long Does it Takes For Gout Pain to Cure?

Before I discuss about how long it takes to cure the gout, you must first have a clear picture on how gout comes about and how long it takes for gout to form. What goes around comes around. If you want to cure a disease, you must track down its root because it will always come back if the root is not removed totally.

Our blood pH must always maintain at mild alkalinity which is at the pH value of 7.365. When you consume too much of acidic food such as meat, seafood, bean, etc. more acid will enter the blood stream and this will lower down the pH of the blood and trigger a series of homeostasis reactions in order to counter the acidosis effect.

One of the pH balancing methods is to force those excess acids out from the bloodstream into the interstitial fluids as a temporary parking. But since the acid input is ever increasing, portion of it will slowly seep into the synovial fluid in the joints. When the concentration of uric acid in the synovial goes beyond the saturation level, crystallization happens and urate crystal is formed and triggers the immune reactions which result in inflammation, burning sensation and pain, intense pain called gout.

Now you have a clear picture of how those urate crystals form in your joints. It takes years for the uric acid to reach a concentration that is saturate enough to cause crystallization. If it takes years to form, it is going take about the same time (or longer) to clear them off and this is only if you start the alkalizing process. Otherwise, the crystals will only grow more and more until a stage that it has nowhere else to hide and that is when tophi or kidney stones start to show.

This is all depending on which direction your lifestyle heading to, acid or alkaline. If you do not take the initiative to reverse the acidosis process, your gout condition will only become worse and worse. The longer you delay, the much longer it is going to take for you to clear off those uric acid crystals.

If you still hope that someday someone will invent some magic gout drugs that can get rid of gout instantly, you are heading towards never-never land with your creeping painful feet. There is no such thing as instant cure for anything diseases, those are only smokescreen that mask away the symptoms or pain.

Believe it or not, the ultimate principle of achieving good health is through common sense. You must first seek to understand your enemy (gout) before you try to cure it. The sad fact is, common sense is not that common after all.

Hemen Ee has helped hundreds of gout patients getting rid of their gout pain by neutralizing those excessive uric acids. But the patients must first have a clear understanding of gout. Ready to learn all about the Truth of Gout? Visithttp://www.understandyourgout.com today for more information!

Side Effects of Common Gout Drugs

How long it takes to heal the gout at my foot?" In order to answer that question, we must first clarify what is the definition of "heal" for the person who asks. Does he mean healing the pain cause by a gout attack at that moment? Or it is about healing or curing the gout once and for all so that it will not attack again? The former is a about a short term instant fix while the latter one is about a gradual long term cure.

For short term fix, the easiest and fastest way it by taking some medication such as NSAIDS or indomethacin to kill the pain and reduce the inflammation. For acute attacks, cortisone (hormone steroid) injection is used, but it should not be used for extended periods because of its potential harmful side-effects.

Usually for those just begun to suffer mild gout attack, doctor will prescribe a drug called colchicines which is a toxic natural extract from the seeds of a plant called autumn crocus or scientifically as Colchicum autumnale. But colchicines, too, has some serious potential side effects including numbness in the hands and feet, abdominal pain, vomiting, hair loss, weakness, vomiting, or abnormal bleeding.

For those patients how have constant high uric acid level, Allopurinol is prescribed to inhibit the formation of uric ucid, possible side effects of allopurinol is skin eruptions, liver toxicity, and minor weakening of kidneys by forcing the kidneys to work extra hard to excrete the uric acid.

The latest gout drug, febuxostat which is another inhibitor of uric acid formation was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on February 16, 2009. Febuxostat has proven to be very beneficial in reducing urate levels. More than 80 percent of patients taking the drug that shows drop in uric acid level, this figure almost double the percentage of those who take allopurinol.

Above are all short term fixes for gout of hyperuricemia, none of them can effectively remove the root of the problem once and for all, but they does provide temporary relief from the intense gout pain. Once you have started on those medications, chances are high that you will have to depend on them for the rest of your life.

Gout begins from what you put into your mouth over the years. It is a direct result of your daily diet. Thus, the only way to cure gout forever is by changing your eating habit and your lifestyle. It is not an easy process, it requires strong personal discipline and perseverance but it is definitely free from any side-effects and 100 percent safe.

Gout - What Will Happen If You Do Not Cut Down Your Alcohol Intake?

Do you experience soreness or sprain-like feeling at your fingers or toes after a night of beer party? If you do, then welcome to the world of gout. You must do something to prevent the development of that condition before it turns into an unbearable gout attack. That is one of the most torturing pain one can ever suffer in his life.

From the experiences I heard from the gout patients, drinking beer will have higher chance to induce gout attack compare to other alcohol liquors. This is mainly because of the fizzy carbon dioxide gas of the beer which gives the cooling sensation for those who drink it.

Carbon dioxide has strong affinity with water which gives it the solubility in the water. And when carbon dioxide dilutes in the water, it becomes carbonic acid. These acids will create a surge of acidity in the body which decreases the pH of blood.

In order to counter the acidity and return the alkalinity of the blood, those acids will be forced out from the bloodstream and enter the interstitial fluids and a portion of it will seep into the synovial fluids in the joints

When the concentration of uric acid in the synovial goes beyond the saturation level, they will crystallize and forms urate crystals that triggers the immune reaction which result in inflammation, burning sensation and pain, intense pain! Gout attack!

This does not only apply to beer alone, even excessive consumption of carbonated soft drinks will render the same effect too. You will be surprised to when you see those demonstration that shows how acidic soft drinks are. The reason why beers give the attack faster than soft drinks is because of the alcohol content in it.

As we know, over consumption of alcohol can cause dehydration, a condition where the body loses water through excessive urination. This is why you feel very thirsty after a few glasses of beer or liquor. When the body liquid decreases, this will increase the concentration and lead to more crystallization.

If you do not cut down your alcohol intake, you are pushing more urate crystals into the joints which will lead to more serious gout attack in the future. Do not wait until the condition become obvious and serious! This is because by then you might need 20 times more effort just to get into your car, if you think you still can step on the throttle or brake.

What Will Happen If Gout Or High Uric Acid is Left Untreated?

Gout is not just a is toe pain that comes and goes, gout is a warning that sign that your body is undergoing acidosis and it needs serious attention before it develops into something more malicious such as cancer or other chronic diseases.

I have met hundreds of gout patients. I would say 90 percents of them are having the problem of hyperuricemia for at least 5 years or more before they engage a serious effort to search for the solution to their problem. Most of them have already developed secondary diseases such as kidney failure and hypertension.

The root of the problem is too much toxic acid in the body, uric acid is just one of them. If these acids are left to accumulate inside the body, it will slowly eat away the healthy cells and organs. As the pH of the internal environment of the body decreases, enzymes and other vital metabolism reactions cannot take place at the optimum rate. Cells either weaken or die off at faster rate and this will results in a vicious cycle which speed up the process of acidosis.

Taking some pain killers or uric acid suppressant pills are just temporary fixes for the gout pain. These kind of treatments will not improve the pH level of the body, once the effect of the chemicals is gone, gout returns!

You should not look for any magic remedy that can cure gout instantly, for there is none. You must first seek to understand the pathway acidosis so you can reverse the process. Once you understand the whole picture and how dangerous it will lead to if left untreated, you will slowly change your lifestyle or diet to return the alkalinity of your body.

What is the Difference Between Gout and Arthritis?

Arthritis is a more general term used to describe a disease where inflammation occurs in one or more joints, which results in pain, swelling, and limited movement. There are many factors that lead to the inflammation which resulted in over 100 different types of arthritis.

One may have joint inflammation for variety of reasons. For older patients, arthritis (also known as rheumatoid arthritis) happened because of general "wear and tear" throughout the years resulted from various physical activities that apply pressure to the joints.

Infectious arthritis or septic arthritis is a fluid and tissue joint infection caused by bacteria, virus or fungus. These infecting agents spread into the joints via bloodstream of adjacent infected tissue. It can also be a direct result of contamination during surgery, injection or injury.

And the most 'popular' type or arthritis in the recent years is gout. Gout is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself because the immune system detected a foreign part in the body. This is same as the self-defense mechanism that is triggered when one get stung by a bee or bitten by an ant: inflammation, burning sensation, and pain. In the case of gout, the pain is so intense that some claim that it is the most painful type of arthritis!

What is the foreign part that triggers gout? It is some fine tiny crystal which is known as sodium urate that formed or crystallized inside the synovial fluid of joints. Naturally, these crystals are not supposed to float around in the joint fluid, so our 'immune police' will classify them as foreign invaders and call for a series of immune reaction which resulted in the symptoms that is known as gout.

What is the Best Way to Control Gout Problem?

The best way is the hardest way. We are living in a fast moving society which, somehow, makes us become less patient and we tend to want something instantly. Most gout patients are always in search of a magical solution that can take away their toe or joint pain once and for all. The sad truth is, there is no magic pill to cure gout.

Usually doctors will prescribe allopurinol for those patients who are having rising uric acid level in the blood. Allopurinol act like a suppressant that minimizes the formation of uric acid in the body. Just like anything in life the more you suppress, the stronger it bursts in the end.

Thus far, the most effective way to control gout is to change your lifestyle habit and diet. It might sound easy at first but when it comes to doing it, most people fail. This abundant world is full of temptations and it is hard to suppress our desire when we see nice yummy food in front of us. If it is so easy, why there are so many obese people waste money on those diet pills and slimming programs?

Gout is a direct result of too excess uric acid in the body and the attempt of trying to remove those unwanted acids is as hard as (or harder) trying to lose weight. Excess weight can be seen or measure with a scale, but it is not so for uric acid. There is no way you can tell how much excess acid is in your body, normal blood tests or pH test can only give you a glimpse of the tip of and iceberg.

Water could the best way to control or even cure gout. At least 60% of our body is made of water and most acids are water soluble. Thus, drinking plenty of water by increasing the frequency (not gulping gallons at shot) and you will slowly flush away the excess uric acid. For much better result, you should consider in a good unit of water processor that produces water with high alkalinity and suggested in one of my books.

Gout is Just the Beginning

It is almost certain that gout patients will develop other health complications if their hyperuricemia condition is kept untreated for a period of time. For some, it is the other way around in which they had other health problems such as hypertension, migraine, etc. before they get their first gout attack.

It is commonly known that gout is a result of high uric acid in the blood, but does it only have one type of acid floating around in our body? Of course not! If you have high uric acid in your body (I used the word 'body' because uric acid does not stay in your blood only), chances are high that you have other acidic compounds that is way above normal healthy range. Some are toxic chemical acids, some are bio-acids produced by the body during metabolism. I often hear people (especially some stubborn professionals) claim that we do not need any external supplement to help neutralize the acidic compounds in the body.

According to their 'professional' understanding, our body has the natural ability to regulate or get rid of those toxic compounds. This natural inborn pH regulating ability is called homeostasis of pH which similar to the heat homeostasis that regulate the body temperature. They often give this example: "Look! When your body becomes too hot, hypothalamus inside the brain will kick start a series of homeostasis biological reactions such as sweating and increased breathing rate to bring down the body temperature back to normal. It is the same for pH regulation, when you have too much of toxic acids in your body, kidneys will do the job to throw away those wastes."

Now imagine what will happen if someone is locked in the hot sauna room for hours? Do you think his body homeostasis reaction can handle that? Of course not! That is just way beyond the natural ability of the body to cope with! Sauna room is considered as an extreme environment to live in. Our body can handle a short temporary abnormal condition with its homeostasis adaptation ability but if the extreme condition is stressed for too long or beyond the tolerance level, the body will start to show signs of fatigue such as dehydration and hallucination as an alarm to tell you to rectify the environment before it is too late.

Gout is one of the warning signs of the body telling you that your body is under intense stress of acidosis. The input of acidic food is way beyond the body ability to eliminate them, the pH of your body internal environment is going down at an alarming rate. Uric acid level is what you can see in your blood test, but there are some other acidic compounds in your body that a standard blood test cannot shows. You don not really have to know their names or chemical formulas, all you need to know is that they are all acids which will slowly corrode your body.

If you do not take actions to neutralize and get rid of those excessive acids, your body cells will be like fishes living in a dirty and filthy aquarium which has not been cleaned for years. Under extreme acidic environment, your body cells will either become weak and dying or they will mutate and become 'monsters' that eventually developed into cancer. A number of researches had proved that most of the modern diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, etc. are all rooted from acidosis.

It is your body! You are the only person who can decide whether to focus on catching the monster fishes (symptoms) or keep the water clean (root). Fixing the symptoms such as gout can be done fast and easy with some medicines such as colchicine and allopurinol, but the effectiveness of the drugs is just temporary and you might slowly become dependent or addicted to them. The ultimate way is to restore a healthy internal environment by slowly changing your lifestyle to a more alkaline way of life. Believe it or not, gout is curable.
